Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a bioactive lipid mediator involved in numerous cellular processes, including cell proliferation, survival, and migration. In the context of exercise and sports nutrition, LPA is most commonly encountered as a supplement ingredient, sometimes marketed under branded names such as "Myo-Tone" or "LPA Matrix." The rationale for its use is based on preclinical studies suggesting LPA can activate signaling pathways related to muscle growth, such as mTOR, which regulate muscle protein synthesis and hypertrophy. Animal and in vitro research has shown that LPA can stimulate muscle cell growth and differentiation, and may play a role in muscle repair following injury. However, direct human clinical evidence supporting the use of LPA supplementation to enhance exercise performance, recovery, or muscle growth is very limited. A small number of preliminary human studies and pilot trials have reported modest increases in muscle protein synthesis or fat loss when LPA is used in combination with resistance training, but these studies are often industry-sponsored, use small sample sizes, and sometimes lack rigorous controls. There is currently insufficient high-quality, peer-reviewed research to conclusively validate the efficacy or safety of LPA supplementation for exercise support. Thus, while the theoretical basis and some early evidence exist, the overall scientific support remains weak and preliminary.
