Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Barleria, particularly Barleria prionitis, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. The leaves and extracts of Barleria have been employed in the treatment of various eye ailments, including eye infections, conjunctivitis, and inflammation. In traditional Indian medicine, poultices or drops prepared from Barleria leaves are sometimes applied directly to the eyes or eyelids to alleviate symptoms of redness, irritation, and infection. These uses are primarily based on anecdotal evidence and historical practices rather than rigorous scientific validation.

There is some preliminary scientific support for the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of Barleria extracts, with in vitro studies showing activity against certain bacteria and fungi. However, direct clinical evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of Barleria in treating human eye infections is lacking. No well-controlled human trials have been published as of mid-2024. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition and some basic pharmacological rationale, the strength of evidence remains limited.

In summary, Barleria’s use for eye infections is rooted in traditional practices, and while there are plausible mechanisms suggested by laboratory studies, the absence of robust clinical data means its efficacy and safety for this indication remain unproven.
