Evidence supporting the use of: Bergenia
For the health condition: Eye Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Bergenia, particularly Bergenia ciliata and Bergenia ligulata, is traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems in South Asia for a variety of ailments, including eye infections. The leaves and rhizomes of Bergenia are sometimes applied as poultices or used in decoctions for their supposed antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. However, while these traditional uses are well-documented in ethnobotanical literature, there is very limited scientific research specifically examining Bergenia's efficacy in treating eye infections. Most studies focus on its general antibacterial or anti-inflammatory properties, often in vitro or against pathogens not directly related to ocular infections. There are no robust clinical trials or direct preclinical studies validating its safety or effectiveness for eye infections in humans. Thus, its use for this condition remains primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than supported by modern scientific evidence.
