Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Embelia, particularly Embelia ribes (commonly known as False Black Pepper or Vidanga), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Unani. In these traditions, Embelia seeds and fruits are valued mainly for their anthelmintic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. With respect to eye infections specifically, historical Ayurvedic texts mention the use of Embelia as a component in various herbal formulations to address eye disorders, including conjunctivitis and other inflammatory conditions of the eye. The rationale for its use is generally based on its reputed ability to clear "toxins" and reduce inflammation. However, direct scientific studies evaluating the efficacy of Embelia preparations for eye infections are lacking. While some research indicates that extracts of Embelia possess general antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, there is no robust clinical evidence demonstrating effectiveness or safety in the treatment of ocular infections in humans. The majority of its use for eye conditions is therefore based on traditional practices rather than scientific validation. In summary, Embelia’s application for eye infections is rooted in historical and ethnobotanical use, not in contemporary clinical evidence.
