Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

European Vervain (Verbena officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, where it has been employed for a variety of ailments, including as a soothing agent for minor eye inflammations or infections. Historical texts sometimes mention its use in the form of eyewashes or compresses for conjunctivitis and other minor ocular complaints. However, these uses are rooted in folk tradition and are not supported by robust clinical research. There are few, if any, modern scientific studies specifically evaluating the efficacy or safety of European Vervain for treating eye infections. The rationale for its use is often based on its reputed anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial properties observed in laboratory settings, but these findings do not directly translate to efficacy in eye infections when used topically or otherwise. Therefore, while there is traditional precedent for using European Vervain in this context, the evidence is weak and modern herbalists generally do not recommend it as a primary treatment for eye infections. For any eye condition, especially infections, medical evaluation is strongly advised due to the risk of complications.
