Evidence supporting the use of: Indian Madder
For the health condition: Eye Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Indian Madder (Rubia cordifolia) has a long history of use in Ayurveda and traditional medicine systems across India and parts of Asia. Its roots are commonly used for their purported blood-purifying, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. In traditional medicine, Indian Madder has occasionally been employed in formulations for eye health, particularly for soothing inflamed eyes or minor infections. However, these uses are primarily based on empirical knowledge and anecdotal reports rather than systematic research.
Scientific validation for Indian Madder’s efficacy specifically in treating eye infections is lacking. While some in vitro studies have demonstrated antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities of Rubia cordifolia extracts, these investigations do not directly address ocular pathogens or the treatment of eye conditions in clinical settings. There are no robust clinical trials or peer-reviewed studies confirming its safety or efficacy for eye infection management. Thus, the use of Indian Madder for eye infections is mainly justified by traditional practices and not by contemporary scientific evidence.
