Isatis (commonly referring to Isatis tinctoria or Isatis indigotica, also known as woad or Ban Lan Gen) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its purported "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties. In TCM, Isatis root and leaf are sometimes included in herbal formulas used for various infections, including those of the eyes, such as conjunctivitis ("red eye"). Historical texts and modern TCM practice mention its use for eye conditions characterized by redness, swelling, and pain, which are interpreted as manifestations of "heat toxins." However, this usage is based on traditional theory and pattern differentiation, not on Western biomedical concepts of infection.

Regarding scientific support, there is minimal direct clinical evidence for Isatis as a treatment for eye infections. Some in vitro and animal studies have shown that extracts of Isatis possess broad-spectrum antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, but these findings have not been specifically extended to eye infections in well-designed human studies. Most scientific literature focuses on Isatis for respiratory viral infections, not ocular conditions.
