Evidence supporting the use of: Lantana camara
For the health condition: Eye Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lantana camara has a long history of use in traditional medicine across various cultures, particularly in India and parts of Africa. In ethnobotanical surveys, Lantana camara leaves and extracts have been reported as remedies for eye infections such as conjunctivitis. The traditional application usually involves preparing leaf decoctions or infusions, which are then used as eye washes or compresses. These practices are documented in several ethnomedicinal texts and field studies, where local healers cite the plant’s purported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects as the basis for its use in treating eye ailments.
However, scientific validation for this practice is limited. A handful of in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts from Lantana camara possess antibacterial and antifungal activities, including against some pathogens that can cause eye infections. Yet, there is a lack of rigorous clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically investigating the safety and efficacy of Lantana camara extracts for ocular use in humans. Furthermore, concerns exist about the potential toxicity and irritation that could result from direct application to the eye. Thus, while traditional use is established, scientific evidence remains limited and does not robustly support its safety or effectiveness for eye infections.
