Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Leptadenia, particularly Leptadenia reticulata, has a history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of ailments, including as a general tonic and for its supposed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. In some traditional Indian medicinal texts, decoctions or extracts of Leptadenia have been recommended for conditions affecting the eyes, such as conjunctivitis or general eye irritation, often as eyewashes or poultices. However, these uses are based on ethnobotanical and traditional practice rather than robust clinical evidence. Scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy or safety of Leptadenia for treating eye infections are extremely limited or nonexistent. A handful of in vitro studies indicate that extracts of Leptadenia may possess antimicrobial activity, but these do not specifically address ocular pathogens or clinical efficacy in eye infections. Therefore, while its use for eye infections is documented in traditional medicine, there is insufficient scientific validation to support its effectiveness for this purpose.
