Rating (out of 5): 1

Ligustrum, commonly known as privet, has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), particularly the species Ligustrum lucidum (glossy privet). In TCM, Ligustrum is believed to support "eye health" and is sometimes prescribed for visual disturbances or general eye weakness. This use is typically tied to its reputed ability to "nourish the liver and kidneys," which, according to TCM theory, are organs thought to influence vision and eye function. However, the actual application of Ligustrum specifically for infectious eye diseases (such as conjunctivitis or bacterial eye infections) is not well documented in the classical medical literature. Most references pertain to its general "eye-brightening" or restorative properties rather than direct antimicrobial or anti-infective effects.

From a scientific perspective, there is almost no clinical evidence supporting Ligustrum's efficacy in treating or preventing eye infections. While some laboratory studies have explored antioxidant and immune-modulating properties of Ligustrum extracts, these findings have not been translated into human clinical trials for eye infection. No major pharmacological studies directly address antimicrobial activity against common ocular pathogens. Therefore, the use of Ligustrum for eye infections is justified primarily by traditional use, with very weak or indirect evidence, and should not be considered scientifically validated for this indication.
