Liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha and related species) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and Asia. Its use for eye conditions, including eye infections, is primarily based on the "Doctrine of Signatures," a historical concept suggesting that plants resembling certain body parts could be used to treat ailments of those parts. Because liverwort leaves superficially resemble the human liver and sometimes the shape of the eye, traditional healers associated the plant with treatments for liver and eye conditions. However, there is scant scientific research supporting its efficacy or safety for eye infections. Modern pharmacological studies have identified some antimicrobial compounds in liverworts, but there is no robust clinical evidence or modern ethnobotanical studies specifically validating its use for human eye infections. Therefore, liverwort's use for this condition is justified by tradition rather than science, and evidence is extremely limited.
