Evidence supporting the use of: Mimosa pudica
For the health condition: Eye Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Mimosa pudica, commonly known as the "sensitive plant," has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and folk medicine in various parts of Asia and Africa. In these systems, various parts of the plant have been used to address a range of ailments, including eye infections and irritations. The traditional application often involves using leaf extracts or decoctions as eyewashes or topical applications to the affected eye. However, the support for this use is primarily anecdotal or based on historical medical texts rather than robust scientific evaluation.
A limited number of laboratory studies have demonstrated that Mimosa pudica possesses some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, but these studies have focused mostly on general microbial activity and not specifically on pathogens responsible for eye infections. There is currently a lack of clinical trials or strong scientific evidence to validate its effectiveness or safety for treating eye infections in humans. Thus, while traditional use exists, the evidence supporting this use is weak and should be approached with caution, especially given the sensitivity of ocular tissues and the potential risks of introducing herbal preparations to the eye.
