Evidence supporting the use of: Patrinia
For the health condition: Eye Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Patrinia (Patrinia scabiosaefolia and related species) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other East Asian medical systems. In these traditions, Patrinia is primarily used to "clear heat and toxins," often for ailments such as abscesses, boils, and certain inflammatory conditions. Within some historical herbal texts and compendia, Patrinia has occasionally been recommended as part of multi-herb formulas for "eye swelling," redness, or infections, though it is not a primary or common herb for eye diseases compared to others like Chrysanthemum or Coptis. The rationale in traditional medicine is based on its general anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties rather than direct evidence of antimicrobial activity against ocular pathogens.
Modern scientific evidence supporting Patrinia’s use specifically for eye infections is extremely limited. There are a few in vitro and animal studies indicating Patrinia extracts possess anti-inflammatory and mild antibacterial effects, but these studies are not focused on ocular tissues or conditions. No robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly support its effectiveness or safety for treating human eye infections. Therefore, while Patrinia’s use for eye infections is rooted in tradition, the evidence supporting this practice is weak and largely anecdotal.
