Evidence supporting the use of: Propolis
For the health condition: Eye Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Propolis has a long history of use in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including eye infections. In folk remedies, it has been applied topically (in various preparations) for conditions like conjunctivitis and blepharitis, based on its reputed antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, scientific evidence supporting the use of propolis specifically for eye infections is limited. A handful of in vitro studies have demonstrated that propolis extracts can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and fungi that may cause ocular infections, but direct clinical studies in humans are scarce. The potential for propolis to cause allergic reactions or irritation to sensitive eye tissues further complicates its use. While some animal studies suggest benefit in reducing ocular inflammation or infection, these are not sufficient to recommend its use over standard, evidence-based treatments. In summary, while traditional use of propolis for eye infections exists and is supported by some laboratory data, robust scientific validation in clinical settings is lacking. Therefore, its use for eye infections remains primarily rooted in tradition rather than strong scientific evidence.
