Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Sea Buckthorn Oil has garnered scientific interest for its potential benefits in eye health, particularly for conditions such as dry eye syndrome, which can be associated with or predispose to eye infections. Several clinical studies have indicated that oral supplementation with sea buckthorn oil can improve tear film stability and reduce symptoms of dry eye, due to its high content of omega-3 and omega-7 fatty acids, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the journal Journal of Nutrition (Larmo et al., 2010) found that sea buckthorn oil supplementation reduced the increase in tear film osmolarity and alleviated dry eye symptoms during periods of environmental stress. These properties may indirectly help prevent eye infections by maintaining a healthier ocular surface and improving the eye’s natural defenses.

However, while the oil’s anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties have been demonstrated in vitro and animal models, direct clinical evidence for its efficacy in treating or preventing active eye infections in humans is limited. Most research to date focuses on dry eye disease rather than acute infectious conditions. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for its supportive use in eye health, particularly in dry eye management, more research is needed to validate its role in treating or preventing actual eye infections.
