Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Silver, particularly in the form of silver nitrate or silver-based compounds, has a well-established scientific history in the prevention and treatment of certain eye infections. Most notably, silver nitrate solution was historically used in neonatal care to prevent ophthalmia neonatorum, a severe conjunctivitis caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae acquired during childbirth. This prophylactic application, known as Crede's method, was introduced in the late 19th century and significantly reduced rates of neonatal blindness due to gonococcal infection. However, with the advent of effective antibiotics, the use of silver nitrate has largely been replaced in many countries due to its potential to cause chemical conjunctivitis and irritation, as well as the broader spectrum and fewer side effects of antibiotic ointments. Nonetheless, silver-containing preparations, such as silver sulfadiazine, remain in use for their antimicrobial properties in other medical settings. The scientific support for silver's antimicrobial activity is robust, but its routine use for eye infections has declined in favor of more targeted and less irritating treatments. Contemporary guidelines generally reserve silver-based therapies for specific indications or in settings where antibiotics are contraindicated or unavailable.
