For the health condition: Eye Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Spanish Needle (Bidens pilosa) is traditionally used in various cultures, particularly in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, for treating eye infections and other ocular ailments. The traditional application often involves extracting fresh leaf juice and applying it directly to the affected eye or using it as an eyewash. Ethnobotanical surveys and folk medicine records document this practice, attributing the plant's healing properties to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. However, scientific validation for its use specifically in eye infections is limited. While some laboratory studies have demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of Bidens pilosa extracts against certain bacteria and fungi, these studies are rarely focused on ocular pathogens or formulated for safe ophthalmic use. There is a lack of clinical trials or robust pharmacological data supporting its efficacy and safety in treating human eye infections. Thus, while its use is well-established in traditional medicine, scientific evidence remains preliminary. Caution is advised as direct application of unprocessed plant material to the eye can carry risks of irritation or secondary infection.
