Tree Turmeric (Berberis aristata), also known as Indian Barberry or Daruharidra, has a longstanding place in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for the treatment of eye infections and related disorders. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe the use of decoctions and pastes made from its stem or root bark for washing the eyes in cases of conjunctivitis and other ocular inflammations. The presumed therapeutic benefit is largely attributed to the presence of berberine, an isoquinoline alkaloid with known antimicrobial properties. Historically, such preparations were thought to help reduce redness, swelling, and discharge associated with eye infections.

While laboratory studies have confirmed that berberine exhibits significant antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity against common pathogens, direct clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of Tree Turmeric preparations for human eye infections are lacking. The traditional use is therefore supported mainly by historical practice and in vitro findings, rather than robust clinical evidence. Some modern ethnobotanical reviews and small-scale studies suggest potential, but there is insufficient scientific validation to strongly recommend its use for eye infections in clinical practice. As such, Tree Turmeric's use for eye infections is justified primarily by tradition, with limited but suggestive supporting evidence from basic research.
