Evidence supporting the use of: Tropical Almond
For the health condition: Eye Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Tropical Almond (Terminalia catappa) has a history of traditional use in various cultures for the treatment of eye infections and other ocular issues. In several ethnobotanical surveys, particularly in parts of Africa and Asia, the leaves or extracts of Tropical Almond are used topically or as eye washes to relieve symptoms of conjunctivitis and other minor eye irritations. Traditional healers attribute antimicrobial and soothing properties to the plant, and its use is often based on generational knowledge rather than documented clinical efficacy.
However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. While some laboratory studies have demonstrated that extracts of Terminalia catappa possess general antimicrobial activity, including against certain bacteria and fungi, there is a lack of direct clinical research evaluating its safety or efficacy specifically for eye infections in humans. Peer-reviewed literature does not provide robust evidence to support its use for ocular conditions, and modern ophthalmology does not recognize Tropical Almond as a standard or recommended treatment. Thus, while the plant is indeed used traditionally for eye issues, the quality and quantity of scientific evidence supporting this application is minimal.
