Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligustrazin (also known as tetramethylpyrazine, derived from the herb Chuanxiong) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis. Its use in supporting or treating eye problems, such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, or other circulatory disorders of the eye, is based largely on traditional concepts that associate these conditions with impaired blood flow or "blood stasis." Historical texts and TCM practitioners have recommended Ligustrazin formulations for eye disorders thought to be related to vascular issues.

Modern scientific studies on Ligustrazin and eye health are limited and mostly preclinical or small in scale. Some animal studies and a few preliminary clinical trials suggest Ligustrazin may have potential benefits for retinal microcirculation and reducing vascular damage in the eye, but these studies are generally low in methodological quality and not widely replicated. As such, its use for eye problems remains supported mainly by tradition, with only modest or inconclusive scientific evidence to date. There is not enough high-quality clinical evidence to strongly validate its efficacy for this purpose.
