Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Lodhtree (Symplocos racemosa), also known as Lodhra, is commonly cited in Ayurvedic and other traditional Indian medicinal systems for treating various ailments, including eye disorders. Historical Ayurvedic texts describe the use of Lodhtree bark and extracts for "netra roga" (eye diseases), especially to reduce redness, swelling, and discharge. The rationale is rooted in its purported astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help with conjunctivitis, eye irritation, and related symptoms when used as a wash or poultice. However, the scientific validation for these uses is currently very limited. Only a few preliminary in vitro or animal studies exist, and these mostly focus on its general anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions rather than specific ocular benefits. There are no well-controlled clinical trials demonstrating efficacy or safety for eye conditions. Thus, while the traditional use is well documented in ethnomedicinal literature, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for eye problems is weak and mainly anecdotal. Caution is advised, as improper use of herbal extracts in or near the eyes can be harmful.
