Orange pigments, particularly carotenoids such as beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, are well-studied for their role in supporting eye health. These pigments are found in various fruits and vegetables (e.g., carrots, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens containing orange-yellow pigments) and are known for their antioxidant properties. Scientific research has shown that beta-carotene is a precursor to vitamin A, which is essential for normal vision and the prevention of night blindness. Lutein and zeaxanthin are concentrated in the macula of the eye and are believed to filter harmful blue light, reduce oxidative stress, and protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Large-scale studies, such as the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS and AREDS2), have demonstrated that supplementation with lutein and zeaxanthin can reduce the risk of progression to advanced AMD in individuals at high risk. Beta-carotene supplementation was also included in the original AREDS formula, but later studies suggested potential risks for smokers, leading to a shift towards lutein and zeaxanthin. Overall, the scientific consensus supports the use of these orange pigments in maintaining eye health and preventing certain degenerative eye conditions, with the strongest evidence for their role in reducing progression of AMD.
