Evidence supporting the use of: Speedwell
For the health condition: Eye Problems
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Speedwell (Veronica officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, where it was sometimes employed for a variety of ailments, including eye problems. In folk medicine, Speedwell was occasionally used in eyewashes or poultices to relieve eye irritation or inflammation, although it was not a primary or widely recommended remedy for eye conditions. The rationale for its use stemmed from its mild anti-inflammatory and soothing properties as noted by traditional herbalists, rather than from rigorous clinical evidence. Modern scientific studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of Speedwell for eye problems are lacking. No robust clinical trials or pharmacological investigations have validated its benefits for ocular health. As such, while there is some traditional precedent for its use in this context, the evidence supporting Speedwell for eye problems is weak and largely anecdotal. Most modern herbal references do not list Speedwell as a significant remedy for eye conditions, and its use for this purpose has become rare.
