Carotenoids, particularly lutein and zeaxanthin, are supported by scientific evidence for their role in supporting eye health. These compounds are concentrated in the macula of the human retina, where they function as antioxidants and blue light filters, protecting ocular tissues from oxidative stress and light-induced damage. Multiple observational and interventional studies, including large-scale research like the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2), have demonstrated that supplementation with lutein and zeaxanthin can increase macular pigment optical density and may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) progression. The American Academy of Ophthalmology acknowledges the potential benefits of these carotenoids for individuals at risk of AMD. While not all studies show a strong benefit for every population or for preventing cataracts, the overall body of evidence indicates a moderate to strong effect in supporting eye health, especially in aging populations or those with low dietary intake. Thus, carotenoids are commonly used to support the eyes, and their use in this context is based on scientific validation rather than just traditional practice.
