Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Crocetin, a carotenoid compound found in saffron (Crocus sativus), has been investigated for its potential benefits in supporting eye health. Several preclinical and clinical studies suggest that crocetin exhibits antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties that may protect ocular tissues. Research has focused on conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and retinal ischemia. Animal studies have demonstrated that crocetin can reduce retinal cell death and oxidative stress. Small-scale human trials have reported improvements in visual function and protection against light-induced retinal damage after crocetin supplementation. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2012 indicated that crocetin supplementation improved visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in patients with mild AMD. However, these studies are generally limited by small sample sizes and short durations, and more large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and to establish optimal dosing. While crocetin is not a mainstream therapy, the current body of evidence provides a moderate degree of scientific support for its use in promoting eye health and protecting against certain degenerative eye conditions.
