Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Dunaliella is a genus of halophilic green microalgae, most notably recognized for its high content of natural beta-carotene, a carotenoid pigment that serves as a precursor to vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for normal vision and eye health, as it is a critical component of rhodopsin, a protein in the retina that absorbs light. Several scientific studies have investigated the bioavailability and antioxidant properties of beta-carotene from Dunaliella salina, demonstrating its effectiveness in increasing plasma beta-carotene and vitamin A levels in humans. Research published in peer-reviewed journals confirms that Dunaliella-derived beta-carotene is efficiently converted to vitamin A in the body, potentially supporting ocular function and protecting the eyes from oxidative damage caused by light exposure and aging processes.

While there is robust scientific support for the role of beta-carotene and vitamin A in eye health, direct clinical studies on Dunaliella supplementation specifically for eye diseases (such as age-related macular degeneration or cataracts) are limited. However, the established biochemical pathway and several human studies on Dunaliella’s bioavailability make its use for supporting the eyes scientifically plausible. Therefore, Dunaliella is used to support the eyes based on its rich content of provitamin A carotenoids and their well-documented importance in maintaining vision and ocular health.
