Rating (out of 5): 3

Fish roe, which includes the eggs of various fish species such as salmon and sturgeon, is a nutrient-dense food that has been studied for its potential benefits for eye health. The primary scientific rationale for its use to support the eyes comes from its high content of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), as well as vitamin A and antioxidants. DHA is a critical structural component of the retina, and adequate dietary intake has been associated with a reduced risk of retinal degeneration and dry eye syndrome. Several studies have shown that diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids can slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness in older adults. In addition, fish roe contains astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant that may provide further ocular protection by reducing oxidative stress in eye tissues. While there is a solid scientific basis for the nutrients in fish roe supporting eye health, direct clinical trials using fish roe itself are limited; most evidence is extrapolated from studies on fish oil or isolated nutrients. Nonetheless, the nutritional profile of fish roe aligns well with current scientific understanding of dietary factors that contribute to eye health, providing moderate evidence for its supportive role.
