Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Fish roe oil is rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). DHA is a major structural component of the retina, and its adequate intake is associated with retinal health and visual function. Several scientific studies have explored the role of omega-3 fatty acids in supporting eye health, particularly in the context of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and dry eye syndrome. For example, a 2012 review in Progress in Retinal and Eye Research highlighted the biological plausibility and epidemiological associations between higher omega-3 intake and reduced risk of AMD. However, large randomized clinical trials, such as AREDS2, did not find a statistically significant reduction in progression to advanced AMD with supplementation of omega-3s. Some smaller studies and meta-analyses suggest potential benefits for dry eye symptoms with omega-3 supplementation, though evidence is mixed and often not specific to fish roe oil but to fish oil in general. Therefore, while the rationale for using fish roe oil to support eye health is grounded in scientific understanding of omega-3s and their role in ocular physiology, direct and robust clinical evidence for fish roe oil itself is limited. The evidence rating of 3 reflects moderate support based primarily on mechanistic reasoning and indirect clinical findings.
