Evidence supporting the use of: Ginkgo Flavone Glycoside
For the body system: Eyes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginkgo flavone glycosides, derived from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree, have a long-standing history in traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese herbal practices. Traditionally, Ginkgo preparations have been used to improve circulation and support cognitive function, with some practitioners also recommending them for eye health—especially in relation to age-related vision problems or circulation issues affecting the eyes. The rationale is that improved microcirculation may benefit ocular tissues. However, scientific validation for Ginkgo flavone glycosides specifically supporting the visual system is limited. Some small clinical studies and animal research have explored potential benefits for conditions like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration, but results are inconsistent and not robustly supportive. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while Ginkgo may have a mild effect on blood flow, there is insufficient clinical evidence to recommend it for eye health. Thus, the use of Ginkgo flavone glycosides for eye support is primarily rooted in traditional use, with only modest and inconclusive scientific backing at present.
