For the body system: Eyes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Glutathione is a potent intracellular antioxidant that plays a crucial role in protecting cells from oxidative stress, including those in the eyes. Scientific studies have identified that glutathione is present in high concentrations in the lens and other ocular tissues, where it helps to neutralize reactive oxygen species and maintain the transparency of the lens. Age-related depletion of glutathione in the lens has been associated with the development of cataracts. Experimental and observational studies show that lower glutathione levels correlate with increased oxidative damage and risk of cataract formation. Some animal studies suggest that boosting glutathione levels can delay or mitigate lens opacification. However, direct evidence from clinical trials in humans showing that glutathione supplementation can prevent or treat eye diseases is limited and inconclusive. Most available evidence supports glutathione’s importance for eye health at the cellular level, but more well-designed human studies are needed to determine the efficacy of oral or topical glutathione in supporting or improving ocular health. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for its relevance to the eye, the strength of clinical evidence for supplementation remains moderate.
