Ligustrum, commonly known as privet and especially referring to Ligustrum lucidum (Glossy Privet), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, Ligustrum lucidum (Nu Zhen Zi) is valued for its purported ability to nourish the liver and kidneys, which are considered closely connected to eye health in traditional theory. It is often used in herbal formulas intended to address symptoms such as blurred vision, dry eyes, and general eye fatigue, especially in older individuals or those with chronic illnesses.

However, while there is a strong tradition behind its use for supporting eye health, scientific studies directly validating Ligustrum's effects on the eyes are limited and mostly preliminary. Some laboratory research has identified antioxidant properties and potential protective effects on cells, which might theoretically benefit eye tissues, but these findings have not been robustly confirmed in human clinical trials focused on eye health outcomes. Therefore, most of the justification for using Ligustrum to support the eyes comes from traditional usage rather than scientific validation.
