Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ligustrum fruit (Ligustrum lucidum), known as "Nu Zhen Zi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for supporting eye health. In TCM, Ligustrum fruit is believed to nourish the liver and kidneys, which are seen as fundamental to maintaining good vision according to traditional theory. It is commonly included in herbal formulas intended to address symptoms such as blurred vision, dry eyes, and age-related visual decline. The rationale is based on traditional concepts rather than direct anatomical or physiological evidence.
From a scientific standpoint, research on Ligustrum fruit has focused mainly on its antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that compounds such as oleanolic acid and flavonoids in Ligustrum may have general antioxidative benefits, which could, in theory, be somewhat supportive for tissues susceptible to oxidative damage, including the eyes. However, there are no robust clinical trials or well-established scientific evidence specifically linking Ligustrum fruit to improved eye health or treatment of ocular diseases. Thus, its use for the eye body system is justified primarily by tradition, with minimal direct scientific support.
