Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Marine lipids, particularly omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as EPA and DHA found in fish oil, have scientific validation for supporting eye health. Research indicates that these nutrients play a crucial role in the structure and function of the retina. Epidemiological studies and randomized controlled trials have shown that higher dietary intake of marine-derived omega-3s is associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2), a large multicenter clinical trial, found that while omega-3 supplementation did not further reduce the risk of AMD progression in addition to other nutrients, observational data and smaller studies have consistently reported protective associations. Moreover, omega-3 fatty acids contribute to the maintenance of tear production and may alleviate symptoms of dry eye syndrome, as supported by multiple clinical trials. The anti-inflammatory properties of EPA and DHA are believed to mediate these benefits. Overall, the use of marine lipids for eye health is supported by moderate to strong scientific evidence, particularly for specific conditions such as AMD and dry eye.
