Neem (Azadirachta indica) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for maintaining eye health. In Ayurvedic texts, neem leaves, oil, and extracts are often recommended as washes or poultices for the eyes to help manage inflammation, infections, and irritation. The practice is largely based on neem’s well-documented antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help soothe the eyes and reduce the risk of conjunctivitis and other infections.

However, the scientific evidence supporting neem’s direct benefit to the eyes is limited. While laboratory studies have demonstrated neem’s antimicrobial effects, there are very few clinical studies evaluating the efficacy or safety of neem specifically for ocular use in humans. Most research focuses on skin conditions, dental health, or systemic infections. As a result, its use for eye health remains primarily grounded in traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation. Caution is also advised, as improper application of neem preparations to the eyes can cause irritation or adverse reactions. In summary, neem’s use to support the eye body system is justified by tradition, but scientific evidence is limited and further research is needed.
