Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Schizochytrium is a genus of marine microalgae that is commercially cultivated as a source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). There is scientific validation for its use in supporting eye health, primarily because DHA is a fundamental structural component of the retina. Multiple studies have shown that adequate dietary intake of DHA is essential for the development and maintenance of normal visual function. For example, research published in journals such as Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci and Prog Retin Eye Res has demonstrated that DHA supplementation can support retinal health and may play a role in reducing the risk or progression of certain eye conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinopathy of prematurity. Schizochytrium-derived DHA is considered a vegan and sustainable alternative to fish oil, with similar bioavailability. However, while the role of DHA in eye health is well-established, most studies are about DHA in general rather than Schizochytrium-specific extracts. Thus, the evidence rating is moderate (3/5), reflecting strong support for DHA's role in eye health, but limited direct clinical evidence specifically for Schizochytrium-derived forms.
