Evidence supporting the use of: Schizochytrium Oil
For the body system: Eyes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Schizochytrium oil is a rich, plant-based source of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which has been extensively studied for its role in supporting eye health. DHA is a primary structural component of the retina, and adequate intake is essential for the development and maintenance of normal vision. Scientific evidence shows that higher dietary intake of DHA is associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and dry eye syndrome. Multiple clinical trials have demonstrated that omega-3 supplementation, including DHA from Schizochytrium oil, can help maintain retinal function and visual acuity, particularly in populations with low dietary omega-3 intake. The use of Schizochytrium oil as a vegetarian or vegan alternative to fish oil for delivering DHA is supported by research showing comparable bioavailability and efficacy.
However, while there is a strong mechanistic rationale and some supportive clinical evidence, results from large, long-term intervention studies are mixed, and not all studies show a clear benefit for eye disease prevention or treatment. Therefore, the scientific community generally considers the evidence to be promising but not conclusive, warranting a moderate rating. Nonetheless, Schizochytrium oil remains a validated and increasingly popular source of DHA for supporting eye health, especially for those seeking non-animal-derived supplements.
