Rating (out of 5): 5

Vitamin A is scientifically validated as essential for eye health. It plays a critical role in the formation of rhodopsin, a light-sensitive receptor protein in the retina that is necessary for low-light and color vision. Deficiency in vitamin A is a leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide, particularly in children. Numerous studies and meta-analyses have shown that vitamin A supplementation can prevent and treat xerophthalmia (a spectrum of eye disorders caused by vitamin A deficiency), which includes night blindness, Bitot’s spots, and, in severe cases, complete blindness. Mixed forms of vitamin A (which include both preformed vitamin A and provitamin A carotenoids) are used to support both immediate and longer-term needs for this nutrient.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and numerous clinical guidelines recommend vitamin A supplementation in populations at risk of deficiency to reduce the incidence of blindness and improve overall eye health. Additionally, research supports the role of vitamin A in maintaining the integrity and function of conjunctival membranes and corneal surfaces. While vitamin A is critical for normal vision, excess supplementation can be toxic; therefore, its use should be carefully monitored, especially in populations not at risk of deficiency.
