Flavonoids are a diverse group of plant compounds known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Their use for supporting eye health, particularly in conditions involving redness or itching (often related to allergic conjunctivitis or environmental irritation), has some scientific basis, though the evidence is limited and mostly preliminary. Several studies have investigated specific flavonoids like quercetin, luteolin, and catechins for their effects on ocular inflammation. For example, quercetin has been shown in animal and some in vitro studies to inhibit histamine release and reduce inflammatory markers in ocular tissues, suggesting a potential role in alleviating symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis. Small clinical studies have reported that flavonoid-containing eye drops or supplements may modestly reduce symptoms like redness and itching, likely due to their ability to stabilize mast cells and decrease inflammatory cytokines. However, large-scale, well-controlled clinical trials are lacking, and most available data are derived from non-human models or small pilot studies. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and early evidence supporting the use of flavonoids for eye discomfort due to redness or itching, the overall quality of the evidence is still low, and more rigorous research is needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
