Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Vitamin A is scientifically validated as an essential nutrient for maintaining healthy vision and the integrity of the ocular surface. Deficiency in vitamin A is a well-established cause of ocular symptoms, including conjunctival and corneal dryness (xerophthalmia), night blindness, and, in severe cases, keratomalacia and blindness. Red or itching eyes can result from a compromised ocular surface, which is more likely when vitamin A status is low. Topical and systemic vitamin A therapies are used to treat and prevent these symptoms, especially in populations at risk of deficiency. Randomized controlled trials and observational studies have demonstrated that vitamin A supplementation reverses ocular surface damage and reduces symptoms such as redness and itching in deficient individuals. However, in individuals with adequate vitamin A status, supplementation does not provide additional benefit for common red or itchy eyes due to allergies, infection, or irritation. Thus, the use of vitamin A for red or itching eyes is scientifically justified in cases related to deficiency, but not for general non-deficiency-related eye discomfort. Leading health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), recommend vitamin A supplementation in regions where deficiency is prevalent to prevent ocular complications.
