Evidence supporting the use of: Bioflavonoids (mixture)
For the health condition: Eyesight (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are plant-derived compounds often used in traditional medicine to support eye health and treat poor eyesight. Their use is primarily based on tradition rather than robust scientific validation. Historically, bioflavonoid-rich foods, such as citrus fruits, have been associated with improved capillary strength and reduced risk of eye conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. Some early observational studies and anecdotal reports suggested that bioflavonoids might benefit the microcirculation in the retina and help reduce oxidative stress, which is implicated in several eye diseases.
However, comprehensive scientific evidence is lacking. While bioflavonoids do exhibit antioxidant properties and may help protect blood vessels, including those in the eyes, large-scale clinical trials specifically targeting eyesight improvement or prevention of eye diseases are limited. Most evidence comes from animal studies or in vitro experiments rather than well-controlled human trials. Thus, while traditional use persists, especially in combination with vitamin C for general eye health, the strength of evidence supporting their effectiveness for poor eyesight is modest.
