Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have a moderate level of scientific evidence supporting their use in maintaining and protecting eyesight, especially with respect to certain conditions that contribute to poor vision. The retina is rich in DHA, which plays a structural and functional role in photoreceptor cells. Several observational studies and randomized controlled trials suggest that omega-3 supplementation may help reduce the risk or progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults. For example, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) investigated the benefits of omega-3 supplementation for AMD, though results were mixed and did not find a statistically significant reduction in progression to advanced AMD. However, other studies and meta-analyses have found a correlation between higher dietary intake of omega-3s and lower risk of developing AMD and dry eye syndrome. Omega-3s, especially EPA and DHA, are also thought to reduce inflammation and support tear production, which can alleviate symptoms in people with dry eye disease—a common contributor to poor eyesight. While the evidence is not universally strong and omega-3s are not considered a cure for poor eyesight, their role in supporting eye health is recognized by several eye health organizations, and supplementation is often recommended for individuals with certain eye conditions.
