Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin A (retinyl palmitate)
For the health condition: Eyesight (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5
Vitamin A, particularly in the form of retinyl palmitate, is strongly supported by scientific evidence for its role in supporting and treating poor eyesight, especially conditions related to vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A is essential for the synthesis of rhodopsin, a protein in the retina necessary for low-light (scotopic) vision. Deficiency in vitamin A can lead to night blindness, xerophthalmia (dryness of the conjunctiva and cornea), and, if left untreated, irreversible blindness. Numerous clinical and epidemiological studies have demonstrated that vitamin A supplementation can prevent and reverse the ocular symptoms of deficiency, particularly in populations at risk due to malnutrition. Organizations such as the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommend vitamin A supplementation to prevent and treat deficiency-related eye diseases. However, for individuals with adequate vitamin A intake and no deficiency, supplementation does not further improve eyesight or visual acuity. In summary, the use of retinyl palmitate (vitamin A) to support eyesight is scientifically validated, but its benefit is most pronounced in deficiency states rather than for enhancement of normal vision.
