Rating (out of 5): 1

Goji berry (Lycium barbarum), also known as wolfberry, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is considered a tonic for strengthening the body, supporting vitality, and promoting overall health. In TCM, goji berries are often recommended to improve general weakness, fatigue, and symptoms associated with what might be interpreted as "failure to thrive," particularly in children and the elderly. The traditional belief is that goji berries nourish the liver and kidneys, enrich the blood, and improve vision and vitality, all of which may contribute to enhanced growth and wellness.

However, direct scientific evidence supporting the use of goji berries specifically for "failure to thrive" is very limited. While some laboratory and animal studies suggest that goji berries are rich in nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, polysaccharides, and antioxidants, and may have immune-enhancing and anti-fatigue effects, there are no well-designed clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for failure to thrive in humans. The traditional use forms the basis for its recommendation in this context, but modern medicine has not validated its specific role for this condition. As a result, the evidence rating is low, reflecting primarily anecdotal and historical use rather than robust scientific support.
