Somatropin is the recombinant form of human growth hormone (GH) and is scientifically validated for use in treating Failure to Thrive (FTT) when the underlying cause is growth hormone deficiency (GHD) or certain other conditions leading to poor growth. Multiple clinical trials and decades of clinical experience have established somatropin’s efficacy in increasing linear growth, improving body composition, and promoting overall physical development in pediatric patients with GHD, Turner syndrome, chronic renal insufficiency, Prader-Willi syndrome, and children born small for gestational age who fail to catch up. Guidelines from authoritative organizations, such as the Endocrine Society and the Growth Hormone Research Society, recommend GH therapy for FTT due to these etiologies.

Somatropin works by stimulating protein synthesis, increasing cell growth, and promoting the release of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which mediates many of its anabolic and growth-promoting effects. Numerous randomized controlled trials and long-term observational studies have consistently shown significant increases in height velocity and final adult height in children with documented GH deficiency or specific syndromes. However, in cases of FTT not related to GH deficiency or these syndromes, evidence does not support somatropin use, and it is not recommended.

In summary, somatropin is a scientifically validated and widely accepted treatment for FTT due to GH deficiency and certain other pediatric disorders, with robust evidence supporting its safety and efficacy for these indications.
