Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Garcinia, particularly Garcinia cambogia, is popularly used as a supplement purported to aid in fat metabolism and weight loss. The active ingredient, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), is believed to inhibit an enzyme called ATP-citrate lyase, which plays a role in fatty acid synthesis. Some small-scale clinical studies have shown modest reductions in body weight and fat accumulation in individuals taking Garcinia extracts compared to placebo. However, the magnitude of the effect is generally minor, and many well-conducted randomized controlled trials have found little to no statistically significant benefit for fat metabolism or weight loss. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews, including those published in reputable journals such as the Journal of Obesity, have concluded that while there may be a slight effect, it is unlikely to be clinically meaningful for most people.

Overall, the evidence supporting the use of Garcinia for "poor fat metabolism" is weak and inconsistent. Most guidelines do not recommend its use for this purpose, and concerns have been raised about the quality of available studies and some potential adverse effects. The use of Garcinia for fat metabolism is therefore supported by only low-quality scientific evidence, and it should not be relied upon as a primary method for improving fat metabolism or inducing weight loss.
