Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Oolong tea is used to support fat metabolism based on both traditional use and an emerging body of scientific evidence, though the latter is still developing. Traditionally, oolong tea has been consumed in East Asian cultures as a beverage believed to promote digestion and aid in weight management. In recent years, several clinical and laboratory studies have explored its role in fat metabolism. Oolong tea contains polyphenols, such as catechins and theaflavins, which are thought to increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation. Some randomized controlled trials in humans have shown that oolong tea consumption can lead to a modest increase in energy expenditure and promote lipolysis (the breakdown of fat), compared to water or caffeine alone. For example, a 2003 study found that oolong tea increased fat oxidation in healthy adults over a 24-hour period. Animal studies have also suggested that oolong tea extracts can reduce body weight gain and improve lipid profiles. However, the overall evidence is still moderate (rated 3/5), as most human studies are short-term, involve small sample sizes, and often do not distinguish the effects of oolong tea from those of caffeine. Larger and longer-term studies are needed to confirm these benefits. Nonetheless, the existing scientific literature does provide a reasonable basis for the use of oolong tea in supporting fat metabolism, though it should not be regarded as a sole treatment for metabolic disorders.
