Evidence supporting the use of: Ashitaba
For the health condition: Fatigue
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) has been traditionally used in Japan and other parts of East Asia as a general tonic to promote health, vitality, and longevity. Folkloric records and anecdotal reports suggest that locals consumed ashitaba leaves and stems for their purported energizing properties, often using them to combat general fatigue and promote overall wellbeing. The belief is largely rooted in the plant's reputation as a "longevity herb" and its role in traditional diets. While ashitaba contains bioactive compounds such as chalcones, vitamins, and minerals, which may contribute to general health, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically supporting its efficacy for treating or reducing fatigue. Preclinical studies have indicated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, but robust clinical trials evaluating its role in fatigue management are lacking. Therefore, the use of ashitaba for fatigue is primarily justified by tradition, with weak scientific support. Anyone considering ashitaba for fatigue should be aware that its efficacy for this purpose is not well-established by modern research.
