Bonito peptide, derived from enzymatically hydrolyzed proteins of the bonito fish (Katsuwonus pelamis), has garnered some scientific interest for its potential to alleviate fatigue. The proposed mechanisms relate to its bioactive peptides, which may have antihypertensive and antioxidant properties. Some Japanese studies and small-scale clinical trials have suggested that supplementation with bonito peptide can modestly improve subjective feelings of fatigue, particularly in populations experiencing mild hypertension or work-related stress. For example, a randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology (2009) found that participants who consumed bonito peptide reported lower fatigue scores on standardized questionnaires compared to placebo, although the effect size was small. Despite these findings, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are limited. Most studies have small sample sizes, short durations, and are often funded or conducted by companies with a commercial interest in bonito peptide products. There are no large-scale, independent, high-quality clinical trials definitively proving efficacy for fatigue. While animal and in vitro studies suggest possible mechanisms (such as reduced oxidative stress and improved microcirculation), translating these effects to meaningful improvements in human fatigue remains uncertain. In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence supporting the use of bonito peptide for fatigue, the evidence base is modest and further rigorous research is needed. Its use is not rooted in longstanding traditional medicine, but rather in recent nutraceutical research.
