Evidence supporting the use of: Glucose
For the health condition: Fatigue
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Glucose is scientifically validated as a treatment for certain types of fatigue, particularly those related to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and during situations of acute physical exertion or illness. When blood glucose levels drop, the brain and muscles lack immediate energy, resulting in symptoms such as weakness, tiredness, and cognitive impairment. Administering glucose rapidly elevates blood sugar levels, alleviating these symptoms. This is the basis for its use in treating hypoglycemic episodes in people with diabetes, where oral or intravenous glucose is a first-line therapy to rapidly restore energy and prevent more serious complications.
Beyond hypoglycemia, glucose supplementation has also been studied in the context of sports and endurance activities. Research shows that ingesting glucose, such as in sports drinks, can delay the onset of fatigue by maintaining blood glucose levels and supplying muscles with a readily available energy source during prolonged exercise. While not all forms of fatigue are caused by low blood glucose, in these contexts, glucose administration is effective and evidence-based.
However, for general fatigue not associated with hypoglycemia or extreme exertion, the evidence for glucose supplementation is less robust, and its routine use is not generally recommended. Overall, the primary scientific basis for glucose in fatigue relates to specific physiological states rather than nonspecific tiredness.
