Evidence supporting the use of: Akkermansia muciniphila
For the health condition: Fatty Liver Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Akkermansia muciniphila is a promising probiotic bacterium that has garnered scientific interest for its potential role in managing metabolic disorders, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Several preclinical studies using mouse models have shown that supplementation with A. muciniphila can reduce hepatic steatosis (fat accumulation in the liver), improve insulin sensitivity, and decrease inflammation. The proposed mechanisms include strengthening the intestinal barrier, reducing endotoxemia (leakage of bacterial components into the bloodstream), and modulating bile acid metabolism. These changes may lower the progression of fatty liver disease by reducing systemic inflammation and improving lipid metabolism.
Human data are still limited but growing. Small pilot studies and randomized controlled trials have shown that oral supplementation with pasteurized A. muciniphila is safe and can improve some markers of liver health and metabolic function in overweight and obese adults. However, direct evidence for benefit in fatty liver disease patients is still emerging, and larger, well-controlled clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and optimal dosing.
Overall, while there is no long-standing traditional use of A. muciniphila for fatty liver disease, the current scientific evidence—primarily from animal studies and early phase human trials—suggests a moderate level of support for its use in this context.
